# How Do I Create Point Earning Rules?

The **Points Program** screen is where you decide how customers earn points. Each rule, called a **point channel** in the admin, connects a store event such as placing an order, writing a review, creating an account, or referring a friend to a specific points award.

Each rule has three main parts:

- **Optional limits:** How often the rule can run and which conditions must be met.
- **A trigger:** The event that activates the rule.
- **A calculation:** Flat points, points per currency unit, a percentage, or a level multiplier.

### **Why Do You Need It?**

- **Reward customer actions:** Give points for purchases, registrations, reviews, referrals, and other supported actions.
- **Build your loyalty program:** Earning rules are the foundation of your Pointics loyalty program.
- **Control how points are earned:** Set the number of points, earning rate, and applicable limits.

### **Step-by-Step Instructions**

#### **Step 1: Open the Points Program**

Go to **Pointics → Points Program** and click **New Point Channel**.

The **Add Point Earning Rule** screen will open.

#### **Step 2: Choose an Earning Trigger**

Select the customer action that should award points.

Common triggers include:

- **Place a paid order:** Reward customers for purchases.
- **Write a product review:** Reward customers for reviewing products.
- **Register at checkout:** Reward customers when they create an account during checkout.
- **Create an account:** Reward new customer registrations.
- **Referral signs up:** Reward customers when someone they referred creates an account.

> **Note:** Available triggers depend on the integrations active on your website.

#### **Step 3: Add Rule Details**

Enter the basic information for your earning rule:

- **Rule Name:** The name displayed for the rule and transactions.
- **Description:** Add optional information about the reward.
- **Start Date:** Set when the rule should begin, if applicable.
- **End Date:** Set when the rule should end, if applicable.

#### **Step 4: Set the Points Award**

Choose how customers will earn points based on the selected trigger.

For standard actions, enter the number of **Points Awarded**.

For purchase-based rules, you can use an earning rate such as:

- **Per $ Spent:** Award points based on the amount spent.
- **Fixed per Item:** Award a fixed number of points for each item purchased.

For referral rules, you can also set points for both the **referrer** and the **referred customer**.

> **Note:** Make sure the earning rate and amount are properly configured. An empty or zero value will not award points.

#### **Step 5: Add Conditions**

You can add conditions to control when an earning rule applies.

Available conditions may include:

- **Minimum Amount**
- **First Time Only**
- **Date Window**
- **User Role**

You can choose whether the rule should match **all** conditions or **any** condition.

> **Note:** Conditions are available with **Pointics Pro**. The free version displays this section but keeps it locked.

#### **Step 6: Save the Rule**

You can save your rule as:

- **Save Draft:** Saves the rule without activating it.
- **Publish:** Saves and activates the rule.

To publish a rule, make sure the rule name and point award settings are properly configured.

#### **Step 7: Manage Your Earning Rules**

After creating a rule, you can manage it from the **Points Program** screen.

- **Edit:** Click **Configure** to update the rule.
- **Turn On/Off:** Use the switch on the rule card to activate or deactivate it.
- **Delete:** Delete the rule to stop it from awarding future points.
- **Filter:** Use the available groups to find specific earning rules.

> **Note:** Deactivating or deleting a rule does not remove points that customers have already earned.

### **Key Functionality**

#### **Different Ways to Calculate Points**

Pointics supports different earning methods depending on the selected trigger:

- **Fixed Amount:** Awards a specific number of points.
- **Points per Currency Unit:** Awards points based on the amount spent.
- **Percentage of Amount:** Awards points based on a percentage of the transaction value.
- **Tiered:** Applies a multiplier based on the customer's loyalty level.

#### **Control How Often Customers Earn Points**

You can limit how frequently a rule awards points, such as:

- Once
- Daily
- Weekly
- Monthly
- Unlimited
- A specific number of times

#### **Refunded Orders**

For the **Place a paid order** trigger, points awarded from a refunded order are automatically removed.
